Monteverdi with Rolando Villazón, Topi Lehtipuu, Patrizia Ciofi and Emmanuelle Haïm
From St. Denis Cathedral
Intelligence, confidence and unflagging vitality – it is these qualities that have led Emmanuelle Haïm to advance to become one of the shooting stars of the early music scene. She is truly exceptional and works incredibly hard, whether as a harpsichordist, conductor, ensemble founder or mother, throwing herself into works by Monteverdi, Händel, Rameau and Purcell with spirit, skill and limitless passion. It’s not for nothing that she’s known by many as “Miss Dynamite”. Emmanuelle Haïm works closely and intensely with those who interest her and share her vision of breathing new life into early music. She is also able to inspire more and more people for early music in the process.
Working with her for the first time was therefore a veritable epiphany for Rolando Villazón: “After talking to her for just a minute and a half, it all became completely clear to me: I’d even sing heavy metal for her if she asked me to.” He’d immediately caught the bug.
On June 23rd 2008, Monteverdi’s “Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda” was performed as part of the Festival de St. Denis. The 18-minute staged opera formed the musical highpoint of this festival held near Paris, the gothic nave of the basilica providing a suitably grand backdrop for the performance.
Topi Lehtipuu sings the role of Tancredi, Patrizia Ciofi the role of Clorina and star tenor Rolando Villazón the role of Testo. Testo tells the story of Tancredi, a Christian hero who falls in love with Saracen Clorinda, who he then kills on the battlefield.
They are accompanied by Emmanuelle Haïm and her “Le Concert d’Astree” ensemble. We also hear several arias, scherzi and madrigals – small, witty compositions – also sung by Rolando Villazón, Topi Lehtipuu and Patrizia Ciofi. Between the arias, we learn more from the restlessly energetic conductor about her musical work and from Rolando Villazón about his encounter with early music.

Music
One particular strength of AVE is classical music production. The spectrum of our productions ranges from large classical music galas for an audience of millions to classical concert recordings to sensitive and concise artist portraits. We repeatedly meet the challenge of bring-ing the fascination of music and our high level of respect for great artists to our viewers with a contemporary interpretation. There is a high degree of affinity between AVE and the young generation of artists who in the last few years in particular have been very successful in con-quering the international stage.
In the last few years, AVE in particular has produced high-quality series of documentaries about "young artistes" (including the violinist Lisa Batiashvili, the drummer Martin Grubinger or the dancer Katja Wünsche), the artists in residence at the Mecklenburg-West Pomerania Festival (including the violinist Julia Fischer, the cellist Daniel Müller-Schott or the violinist Viviane Hagner), great maestros such as Gidon Kremer or Mstislav Rostropovich and their interaction with young musicians or the series of documentaries on "Abenteuer Klassik" ("Classical Music Adventures") for a young audience with the Federal Youth Orchestra. These are supplemented by individual documentaries, individual concert recordings as well as classical music gala events.
